Andrew

Born into a bloodline of accomplished artists, Andrew is carrying over a century of family history into the digital age. He grew up in between his dad’s headphones, with his hand in a coloring book and his eyes glued to network cartoons. Later excelling in the ‘Communications Technology’ program offered by his high school, Andrew was convinced he had found his career path when he became distracted by another digital medium, music.

Within a year of purchasing his first drum machine, he found success in Calgary’s electronic music scene, including weekly live performances and a record deal that lead to a worldwide vinyl release. Moving to Nelson BC in 2004, his art form shifted to the tactile world. He studied fine woodworking at Selkirk College, subsequently exploring cabinetry, timber frame, and custom woodwork.

Throughout these growth spurts in creative outlets, Andrew had still been experimenting with Photoshop in his spare time, creating unique digital artwork and event posters. In 2012, his original aspirations came full circle as he enrolled in Digital Arts & New Media program at Selkirk College. Throughout the program he polished his graphic design skills, while excelling in video production, animation, web design and sound design. Andrew is available for freelance and large-scale video and design projects.

    Aotearoa Superb

I hate to break it to you B.C. but I may have found a better place on earth. New Zealand is seriously challenging your slogan. Breath-taking scenery, fascinating history, and friendly, quirky people in every city & village we step foot in. We spent 5 weeks traveling across both islands, hiking, kayaking, boot-skiing, jet-boating, beaching around and learning to surf. This place is a photographers dream, my new HDD is already half full with images & footage.

Unfortunately the travel portion of our trip got cut short when the van we bought blew a head gasket. My love affair with vintage vehicles bites me in the ass again. On the flipside it happened in Auckland, which seems to have plenty of opportunity in the design industry (and surfing) so it’s time to buckle down and see what kind of neat new job I can land. Fingers crossed.

    Film Camp 2014

One of the highlights of my summer this year was helping facilitate the Senior Director’s Seat Film Camp at Selkirk College. Amy Bohigan of Watershed Productions organizes the camp, and she does an awesome job providing students aged 13-18 with the opportunity to learn about the production process, equipment & software, and to direct their own short film.

I have to admit I was a little nervous with my first teaching experience being high school kids (Dangerous Minds flashbacks), but the students blew me away with their passion for film and creative initiative. Inspiring, and some of them challenged my software limits, specifically my rotoscope skills when one student’s film included a 3 minute split screen - chase scene. I also enjoyed teaching After Effects from the same desk my instructor lectured me from just a few months prior, glad I paid attention!

From sci-fi to film noir, the films turned out great. You can check them out on the camps youtube channel, and if you have little creative one’s 6-18 yrs (there’s a junior camp too), ask them if they want to make some movies next summer!

    andrewfry.ca v2.0

After spending the last long weekend of the summer coding & uploading, I've completely overhauled my website and I'm back online. On top of the new layout, I've added descriptions to all of the content in my portfolio, and this classy new blog! I'll be heading to New Zealand this fall for an extended working holiday, so I figure this is a great spot to document my travels & adventures, while keeping up to date with current projects and releases.
